What Is Keyboard Layout? How To Change It?


Keyboard Layout is any specific arrangement of the keyboard keys. This arrangement can be done mechanically, visually, or functionally. The keyboard layout generally created according to the different languages and use cases. The keyboard layout can be also called “Keyboard Mapping”.

Keyboard Layout History

Keyboard layouts have evolved over time with the change of the user needs and major technology changes. The most popular keyboard layout type “QWERTY” is released by IBM in 1981 with the Personal Computer or PC.

Change Keyboard Layout In Windows

In this part we will change the keyboard layout of a Windows operating system or more specifically Windows 10 operating system. Open the “Start Menu” and type “keyboard” like below. the “Edit language and keyboard options” will be listed below.

Open Keyboard Layout Configuration

In the following screen we will find the current language and click on the “Options” menu like below.

This language options screen will provide currently selected keyboards as well as available keyboard layouts which can be added easily.

Add New Keyboard Layout

The available keyboard layouts will be listed below. We will just select the keyboard layout we want to add.
